Step 1 – Conversation

The process starts with a conversation.

Whose story are we telling? What photos exist and what is known about them? Are there family tales or heirlooms that can be incorporated into the painting? How big should the painting be and how much of the subject do you want to include?

Step 2 – Sketches

After selecting the photo and discussing the context of the painting, two sketches will be done depicting ideas for the painting’s composition. Once a sketch is selected and approved I will begin work on the final painting.

Step 3 – Painting

Beyond simply representing the subject's likeness, the painting weaves a tapestry that reveals the subject's essence, reimagining their untold story and the potential of what might have been.

The many-layered process of applying oil paint to the prepared panel creates a depth that captures nuanced subtleties. Every brushstroke is executed with intention; it's a profound conversation with the subject's soul that enters the realm of the mystical. The subject that is depicted is given a place of honor in the memory of viewers, and a platform from which to speak to future generations.

Through deep dialogue and reverence for the subject, a transformation occurs – a testament to lives silenced by tragedy, contributing to an ongoing dialogue that ensures their stories endure.

These paintings merge artistry with empathy, fostering a connection that spans generations and nurtures understanding. The deepest of human emotion and connection are experienced through storytelling and art. These artworks not only honor the past but also serve as beacons of resilience for future generations, offering a tangible link to history while inspiring a commitment to empathy, understanding, and remembrance.
